The TERRAVERDE project began in 2006 with a joint venture between the Lafarge Group, a world leader in the production of building materials and Essecielle, a company which has been working in the sector of the environment and innovative ecological services for years.
The project, which is inserted in the industrial reality of the Abruzzo region, is a solution to the problem of the treatment of special harmless refuse and the production of alternative refuse-derived fuels (CDR), in line with the environmental policy of the Abruzzo Region aimed at promoting the recycling of refuse and using the fraction of this refuse which cannot be recycled as an energy vector, according to the provisions of the Kyoto Protocol.
The development of plants for the production of CDR, both in private and public waste disposal, helps to reduce the need to use landfill sites and is part of a plan to create an industrial retrieval and recycling system for the PFUs of the region. The retrieving of products from industrial and urban activities in plants which have the right technology and process to treat them responds to the principle of industrial ecology and has numerous advantages for the environment and the community: a saving in natural resources, the retrieving of residual materials without producing more serious gas emissions than those produced by traditional fuels, a reduction in emissions, particularly CO2. CDR is a product which can eliminate the problem of urban refuse. On average the production of urban refuse is 532 kg/inhabitant in the country and about 521 kg/inhabitant in Abruzzo. According to statistics supplied by APAT (Agency for the Protection of the Environment and Technical Services), 553 tonnes of CDR were produced in Italy in 2004, for an estimated potential of 2,600,000 tonnes (40kg/ inhabitant).
PLANT
Terraverde works and produces CDR in an industrial plant of about 2000 square metres close to Pescara, using a fixed grinder (with a low rotation speed and a single shaft) and a double-shafted granulator equipped with a hydraulic comb. The plant can produce about 40,000/50,000 tonnes of CDR annually.
PROCESS
The production process consists of a number of working cycles carried out in succession, which guarantee an adequate calorific value of the final product (CDR - European Refuse Code 191210) and reduce, during the successive phases of selection and separation, the amount of metal, glass and inert particles.
MATERIALS
The incoming materials are packaging waste, dry pretreated fractions and production waste coming from companies working in the plastic and rubber sectors and the production of diapers. All these materials are carefully selected and controlled. The selection phase of the materials to be treated is very important. When they arrive at the plant they have already been treated and cleaned and are of a high chemical and physical quality, essential conditions for the making of a high quality product with a reduced environmental impact.
FINAL PHASE
In the final phase of the process the material is ground down to the right size to be used as energy in the cement factories and/or incinerators of the region instead of using fossil fuels. From the waste material treated only 3-7% is partially retrieved and this is disposed of at landfill sites while the iron is sold to ironworks and/or steel plants.
